The draft of my thesis paragraph is below, with my thesis statement underlined.
The economic downturn has created a return to family
values. As people lose their high paying
jobs, they turn to other things for evidence of their self worth. The book Up
in the Air, published in 2001 during positive economic times, illustrated
the lack of humanity and the disconnection between people; whereas the movie,
released in 2009 amidst a punishing economic climate, emphasized the
connections. The heart of the movie was
about family and intimate relationships.
The interviews at the end of the movie that showed people talking about
how their family or friends got them through the crisis reflect the change in
our society. What people focus on is
what their lives become; so focusing on work – as in the book – creates a
status-based outlook, whereas having the spotlight on personal development creates
a more holistic outlook with work being a part of the balance but not the focal
point.
Read Fired exec: 'Starbucks saved my life': "When I lost my job I thought my life was over," he says. "I didn't realize it was just the beginning." He smiles contentedly and declares, "I may have a part-time job, but I have a full-time life" (Ogunnaike, np).

Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI thought you did a great job. Your points were very clear as to what you are going to write about in your essay. I also liked your opening sentence because it caught my attention. Other than that I think you are heading in the right direction. Good luck on the rest of your essay!
Cindy,
ReplyDeleteGreat job, I agree with Taylor that your paragraph is very clear and well organized. I like your overall thesis statement, it has a great point about our society's problem of labeling people for what they do as opposed to who they are. I missed the interviews you reference in your post, I will have to take a second look at the movie! Thanks again
Thanks Cindy. You took this essay to a place I never would have associated, I like that great potential. I would just be careful you fully reflect back to the changes in economic and political climates. I'm sure it will be great. Thanks.
